Meet the Coach

Sheila Bermudez

Health coach - teacher - mom - marketing professional - banker.  A twisting career brought me to the health and wellness world, but I wouldn’t change a thing!

Sport and activity was always a part of my life.  I grew up playing soccer and basketball.  A weight training PE class in college opened the world of strength training to me.  My adult sport life included intramural soccer while at the University of Michigan for my MBA degree and, later,  ladies league soccer.

After an ACL injury, I began running more for sport, completing many races including 3 sprint triathlons, 7 half marathons - one (and only one!)  in under 2 hours.  I’ve participated in fundraising events for Team in Training, Ovarian Cancer Research Fund and National Ovarian Cancer Coalition.  I have worked with personal trainers over the years in strength and agility as well as some pilates.

Trouble for me came in 2014 when I changed careers into elementary education and my husband spent most of his time starting a company in another state.  I was constantly working, handling everything for our three children, and generally neglecting anything healthy for myself.  By 2017, I was about 40 pounds heavier and not doing well physically or mentally.  I had to get back to basics, set goals again, and remember how great being healthy feels- body and spirit!  Working with my own fitness coach helped me get the guidance and accountability I needed to get back in shape.

As I hit various plateaus, I educated myself on the science of weight loss and what the tools are to achieve a healthy, fit body.  I wanted to get lean, and I was frustrated by the last bit of abdominal fat that just would NOT go away.  I even looked into the “tummy tuck” option to surgically remove it!  But the reality was that I had not pulled all the levers at once to REALLY try my best to get leaner.  I learned it was the whole combination of strength + cardio + stress management + quality sleep + good nutrition - alcohol that finally got me the results I wanted.  I could master several of these at a time, but without some effort in every category all  together, I was stuck. It finally clicked for me- even with menopause complicating things.

When I turned 51, I outlived my Mom.  Unbelievable!  I was 25 when she died, and that age, 51 seemed “old” to me.  It is NOT OLD!!  Now I feel that every single day in a healthy body is a miracle- a gift to me that must be appreciated.

At the start of my career, I worked in Marketing and learned the art of targeting and advertising to consumers. Now, this industry knowledge makes me even more dedicated to helping people who are targeted and manipulated by processed food companies.  Now certified through the amazing program at Dr. Sears Wellness Institute, my goal is to help clients educate themselves and take an active role in creating the healthy life that they deserve.  I'm also currently studying to become a CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER as well!!  I want to support clients and guide them along the way of taking small steps successfully that will accumulate into a larger life shift away from the unhealthy life they had before. It is not too late!
